BRand Design This project involved designing a data visualization that transforms heavy, somber data into a more accessible and visually engaging experience. It included exploring layout options, implementing data filters by section and year, and adding a dark mode to improve accessibility for a broad audience.

PROJECT Overview:
This project explores the evolution of technology through three square posters, focusing on the past, present, and future of artificial intelligence.

Pattern 1 (Past): Highlights the internet as the foundation of modern technology, using 5G towers to represent digital connectivity.

Pattern 2 (Present): Examines AI’s current role in daily life and business, addressing both its benefits and ethical concerns.

Pattern 3 (Future): Imagines a dystopian world where technology is revered as a god-like force, reflecting fears of overdependence.

Together, the posters form a cohesive narrative, visually connected through evolving shapes and colors. Presented in a motherboard-inspired layout, the work reflects on AI’s growing influence and the importance of maintaining human agency.

Inspiration:
Past Pattern

Explored the origins of modern technology, focusing on the internet
Chose 5G towers as a visual symbol of connectivity
Used dots to represent towers and lines to show digital connections
Aimed to depict the vast, interconnected nature of the internet
Reflected the foundational role of the internet in today’s tech landscape

PResent Pattern

Researched the rapid integration of AI across industries

Found that 82% of companies have adopted AI in at least one function (McKinsey)

Noted common uses like chatbots and personalized recommendation systems (e.g., Amazon)

Highlighted AI’s impact on improving efficiency and influencing consumer behavior

Addressed concerns about unchecked AI growth, as raised by figures like Elon Musk

Examined ethical issues, including AI-driven surveillance and privacy risks

Emphasized the dual nature of AI: transformative potential and serious ethical considerations

FUTURE Pattern

Initially focused on human enhancement through technology (e.g., Neuralink, microchip implants)
Explored concepts like embedded tech for payments and data access

Found this direction limiting and disconnected from the overall theme

Shifted to a more imaginative, dystopian future concept

Envisioned a world where technology becomes a god-like entity

Used this new direction to explore deeper, more symbolic creative ideas

Broke free from earlier constraints, allowing for greater creative freedom

Pattern 1(PAST):

Simple network experimentation

Experimentation with a duplicated 5G tower network using a different layout

More complicated exploration of the 5G tower network and their connections

Experimentation with 5G tower layout, depicting towers as teal circles and connections as light blue lines

pATTERN 2(pRESENT):

Began by exploring the shape of the brain using 50% symmetrical lines and organic, natural forms.

Experimented with pattern transitions across the timeline, including different color palettes.

Considered representing the spread of AI as cell division or a living organism, similar to a plague.

Tested various line widths and lengths before adding color, while making subtle adjustments to the main form.

pATTERN 3(fUTURE):

Began expanding the existing pattern.

Resembled a human figure bowing or worshiping.

Chose to emphasize and develop this form further.

Focused on brain implants.

Considered the possibility of implants replacing neurons in the future.

Reflected on the merging of technology and human cognition.

Design Challenges:

Narrowing down from multiple themes to focus on AI evolution.

Creating a cohesive narrative across Past, Present, and Future posters.

Representing abstract concepts (e.g., internet, AI, dystopia) through patterns.

Balancing visual progression without repetition.

Integrating feedback on layout, density, and structure (e.g., motherboard reference).

Experimenting with form, line work, and color to show technological evolution.

The goal was to present this often grim data in a brighter, more accessible way. Through a clean, filterable interface with both section and year-based navigation, users can track progress and disparities over time. A dark mode option was added to enhance accessibility for a broader audience.

Overall, the design offers a compelling, user-friendly visualization that highlights key regional challenges and the potential impact of policy and investment in improving well-being.

Key Features

Each pattern features evolving visual complexity—starting with simple lines and dots (Past), incorporating color and geometric depth (Present), and ending with intricate, human-like shapes and wire-like curves (Future). The designs reflect the increasing integration, influence, and potential dominance of AI in society.

Solution:

The solution was to explore the progression of artificial intelligence through a series of three abstract patterns representing the past, present, and future of technology.
